Frequently Asked Questions
Dead wooding involves the removal of deadwood from a tree. As many tree varieties mature some branches can become partially broken due to wind others simply die back to allow more nutrition to flow to new branches. The result of this deadwood provides a potential hazard from falling branches and in the case of broken branches provides a greater opportunity for a tree to become infected with a disease. If you suspect that you have a tree with large amounts of deadwood call upon us out, so we can inspect your tree for infection or any dangerous or unsightly dead wood and carry out any necessary tree services Coggeshall.
Crown Thinning
To provide balance to a tree crown thinning simply involves removing a number of the inner branches of a tree. This is done in a structured fashion to balance the tree. The main benefit of this type of tree pruning allows more light to get into the tree and it also reduces the opportunity for strong winds to take hold of more branches and more leaves thereby reducing the potential for the tree to be uprooted. The overall shape of the tree is not altered with this type of tree cutting.
Crown Lifting
As the name implies this tree cutting focuses on raising the level of the trunk in proportion to the branches giving the impression of a heightened tree. This is achieved but cutting and removing the lower branches of the tree. Depending on the location of the tree this type of tree cutting may be to remove low hanging branches which have become an obstruction or to simply allow more sunlight to access plants and flowers nearer the base of the tree to provide them with better growing conditions.
Crown Reduction
Sometimes referred to as topping or lopping, although these terms are generally used to imply a more ‘flat top cut’ crown reduction involves a general cut around the tree’s canopy to reduce its total size – it can be likened to deflating a ball to the level where it still remains round. This is not to say that it is cut to a spherical shape but simply pruned tall round to provide an even, neat finish. With this type of tree cutting, it provides an opportunity to prune to encourage tree health, so dead wooding and removing of crossed branches would also be carried out as part of a crown reduction.
We provide these tree services Coggeshall, so please contact us if you wish to undertake any of these tree pruning activities.
Essentially there are two main ways to get rid of a tree stump following tree removal. The more common and preferred is through stump grinding. This is a mechanical process using a purpose-built stump grinder. The stump grinder is a little like a giant angle grinder where a large toothed wheel cuts the stump from top-down to below ground level into large chips. By going below ground level this level of cutting will often kill the tree and allow the ground around it to be unaffected. New soil can be laid, above what is left of the stump and can be used immediately afterwards.
The other method involves the use of chemicals. Different chemicals are available but the process is similar for most, which will involve drilling several holes into the stump and pouring in the chemicals down them. The chemicals cause the stump to die and eventually rot making it easier to remove what’s left of the stump. This method is becoming less popular since it takes time for the process to work through the stump. Clearly, it is less environmentally friendly and the other downside is that the chemicals will seep into the surrounding soil. Depending on soil, rain and other conditions this has the effect of making the surrounding soil unusable for new plants for a period of time, unlike stump grinding.
